What is a KCBS State Championship & Who Can Compete?
The Kansas City BBQ Society has spent decades perfecting BBQ Competitions. They send representatives to our event to ensure that everyone is competing by the guidelines they have established. The answer to who can compete is a simple one, anyone! The entry fee is a little bit steeper than the Backyard BBQ tournament but so are the rewards. If you are signed up as a KCBS team you will be rewarded with not only cash but points as well. If you compete in enough tournaments the points can earn you entry into national championships like the American Royal or the Jack.
Entry Fee:
$275.00 per team (Before March 31st)
$250.00 per team (If entering the People’s Choice and paying before March 31st)
$300.00 per team (After March 31st)
$275.00 per team (If entering the People’s Choice and paying after March 31st)
*Each entry includes 4 wristbands for the festivities on Saturday. Additional wristbands can be purchased for $10/carload. All proceeds go to the Proclaiming Grace Outreach charity.

Cooking/Campsite
Friday night's campsite is FREE and will be assigned after you send in your registration payment. You can arrive as early as 9:00 AM on Friday morning. Check out time is 7:00 PM on Saturday. If you wish to arrive early, stay longer or drop some items off before Friday you may call the Rockahock Campground Office (804 966 8362) and reserve your campsite ahead of time. Rockahock has a discounted rate of $30 per campsite for Thursday night and Saturday night.
The cooking sites are actual RV campsites. Most of them have gravel driveways and grass yards. All of the campsites are roughly 75 feet by 25 feet. They also come with water hook-ups, sewer connections and 50/30 amp electric outlets (we sell 30 amp to 110 adapters in our store but they can be purchased at Walmart or Amazon as well). Rockahock also offers cable TV connections and Wi-Fi on most sites. The Pro teams campsites come with large paver patios this year. The primitive/overflow sites do not have cable TV. Those sites will be assigned to the late arrivals/registrants if needed.
PS - Rockahock has Cottage, Villa and Yurt Rentals, but hurry they go quick!

Judging:
Will be blind judging by the KCBS Judges.
Start Time:
Meat inspections will begin at 9:00AM on Friday morning. After you pass inspection you can begin prep work.
People’s Choice
People’s Choice is an optional category. You must provide proof of a mobile food permit or get issued a temporary food permit by our local health department because your entry will be judged by the patrons of the Pickin’ N Pullin’ BBQ Competition. Competitors turn in 4 pork butts to the Rockahock event staff. Your dish will be given a secrete number that only the staff knows. Patrons of the BBQ Competition will be sold a ticket to sample your BBQ. Each patron gets (1) one vote for his or hers favorite pork sample. The teams with the most votes win!
*All the proceeds from the People’s Choice Category are donated to Proclaiming Grace Outreach, a local non-profit 501(C)3 organization whose mission is to help those in need of food, clothing, and small home repair in the New Kent and James City County area.

P.C. Start Time:
After New Kent Health Department Inspects and approves your cooking area on Friday, April 27th. Your KCBS entries may be prepared anytime after your meat inspection.
P.C. Meat:
1) Will be supplied by competitors, but you will receive a discount of $25 on your PNP entry fee.
2) You must turn in 4 pork butts. You will receive 2 aluminum pans with tops to use for turn-in.
3) Meat must stay in its raw and natural form (no additives marinades, injections, seasonings etc) until after meat inspections.
4) Your meat and your working space must be inspected by the local health department. Download an application to see the requirements. If you are not already licensed to serve food in the state of VA please fill out a Temporary Food Permit to serve your food in the People’s Choice Competition. Temporary Food Permits must be turned in no later than April 1st, 2018. The event organizer will pay for your Temporary Food Permit so please send your paper work to jcaldwell@rockahock.com or mail them to 1428 Outpost Road Lanexa, VA 23089 to the attention of Jon Caldwell.
P.C Turn in:
1) 2:45 PM to 3PM Saturday, April 28th inside the Clubhouse.
2) Must be shredded, pulled or chopped
3) Must be sauced before it is turned in to event staff
4) No garnishments
